Seton Care Befrienders

Seton Care has recently been successful in gaining funding from Comic Relief in order to provide a voluntary befriending service for older people in both Berwickshire and north Northumberland. Known as the Early Intervention Project, the project is funded for three years. The project will encourage people over 55 to volunteer as befrienders with older people who may be socially isolated or just need a friend. Befrienders will accompany the people they volunteer with to social events, hobby clubs, day centres, or to do shopping or go to the chemist. There will even be the chance to go for day trips together. However, if someone just needs a volunteer to pop in and say hello and have a cup of tea, that can be organised too.

The project now needs volunteers to help it get off the ground. Would you like to help isolated, local, older people? St Abbs Head National Nature Reserve

St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve has spectacular cliff-top scenery, and a chance to feel as if you are somewhere really wild just a short walk from civilization. In the summer months, tens of thousands of nesting seabirds jostle for space on the cliffs, and beautiful carpets of wild flowers adorn the grasslands behind. The Reserve boasts a wealth of other wildlife, as do the surrounding inshore waters, which form part of Scotland’s only Voluntary Marine Reserve. You can learn more about the wildlife and history of the area at the Nature Centre (grid ref NT 913 674), or join a ranger-led walk.

Eyemouth Harbour Ready to Receive Cruise Ships

EYEMOUTH HARBOUR READY FOR ITS FIRST CRUISE VISIT

Eyemouth Harbour is now ready to receive cruise passengers, with its first arrival scheduled for Sunday 19^th August. ‘MS Island Sky’ will be anchoring off Eyemouth from 1330 to 1830hrs and tendering passengers to the pontoon on the Middle Pier.

Over recent months Eyemouth Harbour Trust (EHT) has been working to become a Department for Transport (DfT) approved port and have recently been awarded accreditation. With effect 31^stMay 2012, Eyemouth Harbour fulfils the provisions of Chapter XI-2 of the SOLAS Convention, Part A of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) and has an approved Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP). As such, they can now accept cruise passengers onto the pontoon and quayside.

EHT’s details will shortly be forwarded to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for inclusion on the UK PFSP approved ports list and Department for Transport (DfT), Transport Security Compliance Division (TCSD). Maritime Directorate will issue a Statement of Approval in due course.

The MS Island Sky will start its 13 day ‘Islands on the Edge’ tour of the British Isles on Friday 17^th August 2012 from Tilbury stopping off at Whitby, Holy Island, before anchoring off Eyemouth Harbour on Sunday 19^th August for the afternoon before heading on to Leith. It will then continue its journey north to Orkney, St Kilda, Skye, Iona, Ratmullen, Aran Island, Knightstown, Scilly, Sark and Alderney on Channel Islands before ending its journey in Portsmouth.

This is the first ever cruise ship calling at Eyemouth Harbour and EHT Chairman, Grahame Sinclair said “This is a very exciting opportunity for Eyemouth Harbour and the local businesses. The Harbour Trust’s staff have trained to handle this kind of business and have seized the opportunity with both hands. We aim to prove that Eyemouth is a town of great interest to visiting passengers and that this is the beginning of more cruise ships making a stop-over in the bay.”

Gunsgreen House Manager, Derek Janes commented “We are delighted with this exciting new development and look forward to welcoming passengers to Gunsgreen House and Eyemouth in years to come. It marks an important stage in the revitalisation of the port of Eyemouth and demonstrates the contribution that it can make to the growth of tourism in this area. Congratulations to the Harbour Trust!”

For passengers who wish to explore further afield, there is a planned trip to Floors Castle and EHT will be organising a meet and greet party to assist any passengers who wish to stay in Eyemouth for the afternoon and enjoy the many attractions the town has to offer.

The MS Island Sky is one of the finest small ships in the world. With a maximum passenger capacity of only 114, a vessel of her size is capable of carrying many more but instead the ship has the benefit of 57 unusually large suites, luxuriously appointed public areas and spacious outside decks. Owned and operated by global cruise company Noble Caledonia, the ship has a crew of 75.

Eyemouth’s Provost and Chair of Eyemouth Town Community Council, Johanna Pawley, added “Eyemouth has so much to offer visitors, with three fabulous museums, a variety of shops places to eat, coastal walks, scenery and wildlife. We hope that this is the start of many visits and are grateful for all the hard work the Harbour Trust has put into arranging this visit. We hope the passengers have an enjoyable time in our town.”

Eyemouth and District Chamber of Commerce, Kerry Waddell added “This is really fantastic news for Eyemouth businesses in the midst of a very difficult economic period. I hope that the arrival of cruise ships in the harbour will increase visitor numbers for us all and create opportunities for additional trade. Our challenge now is to ensure we encourage these new visitors to spend some time in the town by showcasing to them all that we have to offer.”

Councillor Stuart Bell, Executive Member for Economic Development at Scottish Borders Council said: “The news reflects the significant development work by the Trust, supported by the Council. The harbour facilities offer another important tourist gateway to the Borders and the prospect of linking to other destinations across the area is very encouraging. The Council has made a significant investment to deliver European Fisheries Fund Programme and growing tourism is a key part of this fund. There are exciting opportunities between the cruise market and other projects under development that we will ensure are maximised.”.
